Employment Physicals: What to Expect and Why They’re Important
So you’ve just gotten a new job – congratulations! The job offer has been extended, and now you are told you’ll have to do a drug test, fill out some paperwork with HR, and complete… a physical? Yes, there are many jobs that employers may request that the applicant pass an employment physical in order to be hired as part of a conditional job offer. These exams may include drug and alcohol testing, psychological tests, and physical or mental health assessments, depending on the requirements of the position.
Per the Americans with Disabilities Act, companies may only request an employment physical after a job offer has been extended, but only if all others in the same job position have had to undergo a physical, as well. Most places of employment will only request a physical if the job has elements of activity that require an individual to be healthy and relatively fit, such as police officers, firefighters, and various manual and physical labor jobs. This is all in order to ensure that should you become part of the team, you are able to perform all job tasks as needed. If your new job does request a physical be completed, it’s important to know your legal rights as well as any liabilities that may fall to the employer should you become injured from required testing.
During an employment physical, you’ll have much of the same experience as a regular physical exam, such as a vitals check, measurements of height and weight and review of medical history. You will be asked what medications you are taking, both over the counter and prescription, as these may affect your ability to perform job-related tasks, such as operating heavy machinery. Getting accurate results and information during a physical is essential in ensuring your safety and the safety of others at your new job.
