STI vs. STD – What is the Difference?

You may hear both terms used: STI (sexually transmitted infection) and STD (sexually transmitted disease). They are closely related but technically describe different stages. This distinction matters because it highlights why regular testing is so important: catching an infection early, before it progresses, gives you and your provider the best chance of treating it effectively and protecting partners from exposure.

STD (disease)

An STD refers to the disease stage: when an untreated infection progresses and begins to cause measurable health effects.

STI (infection)

An STI refers to an infection in its early phase: the pathogen may or may not be causing symptoms yet. Many STIs are asymptomatic.

What Happens If I Test Positive?

A positive result is not the end of the conversation — it’s the beginning of treatment. Many STIs and STDs are highly treatable, and our team will walk you through your options clearly and compassionately.

Bacterial infections — including chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis — are typically treated with antibiotics prescribed by your provider. It is important to complete the full course of treatment and notify recent sexual partners so they can be tested as well.

Viral infections — including herpes, HIV, and hepatitis — are managed rather than cured. Antiviral medications can significantly reduce symptoms, transmission risk, and long-term health effects. Your provider will discuss referral to a specialist or ongoing care as appropriate.

HPV — most strains clear on their own, but your provider can discuss monitoring, treatment of warts if present, and the HPV vaccine if appropriate.

If you are pregnant and test positive for any STI, please let your provider know immediately. Some infections can affect fetal health, and your care team will need to discuss delivery planning and treatment options with you.
