3D and 4D Ultrasounds

When you’re expecting, waiting until you deliver to see your baby’s precious features can feel like a lifetime away. The traditional black and white ultrasound images provide valuable information regarding your baby’s development, but do little to show off his or her adorable features. At Midwest Express Clinic, we are always looking for new ways to meet our patients’ needs, and we are proud to now offer elective 3D/4D ultrasounds at select locations to give you an early glimpse at your new addition.

What is a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

A 3D/4D ultrasound is an elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound. Unlike the traditional 2-dimensional, black and white ultrasound, the 3D provides a three-dimensional, realistic image of your baby. Although these provide more detailed images, they work just like regular ultrasounds, utilizing sound waves to create an image of the baby within your womb. When using 4D, you can view a live video of the three-dimensional fetus, so you can see your baby’s movements and facial expressions. Parents who choose to use this imaging often do so as a way to see their baby’s face in more detail. When the service is chosen to be performed by a physician, it is usually to help show or identify certain birth defects, such as a cleft palate, that is not as easily visible with a traditional ultrasound.

The Best Time to View Baby

For the best image with a 3D/4D ultrasound, it is recommended to be performed sometime during 22-34 weeks gestation. It is possible for our medical providers to visualize your baby sooner or later, but the images may not be as clear due to underdevelopment if done too early, or there may be limited visualization because of the baby’s size at 34+ weeks.

Preparing For Your 3D/4D Ultrasound

Please drink around 26-28 ounces of fluid around one hour prior to your exam. Your bladder should be full. Eating something sweet prior to your appointment can also help get the baby moving. No other preparation is needed.

Patients will receive a heartbeat stuffed animal with their baby’s heartbeat inside and images of the baby in 3D/4D on a USB drive.

While we accept most major insurances, 3D/4D ultrasounds are not covered by insurance as they are considered elective and will require payment prior to your appointment.

We also offer traditional ultrasounds for diagnostic and medical obstetric needs, including pregnancy confirmation; gender reveals; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester checks; size and dates; fetal Doppler; and level 2 surveys.
