What You Should Know About Gynecologic Cancer

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event to raise awareness about the five primary types of gynecologic cancer: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. About 109,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer every year, according to the American Cancer Society. By educating yourself about these types of cancers, you’ll be better equipped to take charge of your health and ensure that the important women in your life do the same. Read on to learn more and find out how you can help reduce your risk of developing gynecologic cancer in the future.

Types Of Gynecologic Cancer

Gynecologic cancers are the result of uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the female reproductive organs: the cervix, uterus, ovaries, vagina and vulva.

  • Cervical Cancer: This cancer affects the lower part of the uterus known as the cervix. Routine Pap tests and HPV vaccinations are crucial in preventing and detecting cervical cancer in its early stages.
  • Ovarian Cancer: Commonly referred to as a “silent killer,” ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Knowing the primary symptoms, such as pelvic pain and irregular bleeding, is vital to early detection.
  • Uterine Cancer: Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, affects the delicate lining of the uterus. Abnormal bleeding, including after menopause, is a key symptom to watch out for.
  • Vaginal and Vulvar Cancers: Although less common than the other types of gynecologic cancer, vaginal and vulvar cancers can cause changes in the skin or tissue of the vulva or vagina. Symptoms can be easily confused with common infections such as yeast infections, which is why it’s important for healthcare providers to do a comprehensive evaluation before making a diagnosis.

Early detection drastically increases the chances of successful treatment for gynecologic cancers. Prioritizing regular pelvic exams and Pap tests is essential to early detection, as well as monitoring and reporting any new symptoms as soon as possible.

Common Symptoms of Gynecologic Cancer

While some gynecologic cancers may not present any noticeable symptoms in the early stages, some key signs to be aware of include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Bloating
  • Frequent and/or difficult urination
  • Unexplained weight fluctuations
  • Excessive fatigue

Given that these symptoms can also be linked to a number of other conditions, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

How To Reduce Your Risk of Gynecologic Cancer

Regular health screenings and healthy lifestyle habits reduce your risk of gynecologic cancer. Tips to help decrease your risk of developing gynecologic cancer include:

  • Routine Wellness Screenings: Schedule your annual wellness screenings and Pap smear tests as recommended.
  • HPV Vaccination: The HPV vaccine can help protect against several types of HPV that can cause cervical and vaginal cancer.
  • Healthy Living Habits: Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your risk of gynecologic cancer.
  • Know Your Family Medical History: If you have a history of gynecologic cancers in your family, it’s crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider, as they may recommend you get screened more frequently than those with no family history of gynecologic cancer.
