At Midwest Express Clinic, we are always looking for ways to better provide patients with convenient healthcare services. We are proud to now offer ultrasound services at select offices! An ultrasound, or sonography, is a great way for our physicians to safely get a glimpse of the body’s internal structures, helping accurately diagnose and treat various diseases or conditions.
What is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a safe imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to get a glimpse at specific organs or structures within the body. A simple hand-held device, called a transducer, is placed on the skin over the area to be examined. The sound waves travel through soft tissue and fluids and bounce back after meeting a denser surface, resulting in an image on the screen. While it seems similar to an x-ray, the procedure does not expose you to any radiation.
Diagnostic Ultrasounds Offered at Midwest Express Clinic
The professional medical staff at Midwest Express Clinic can provide the following ultrasound services:
- Abdominal Exams (Kidneys, Gallbladders, Livers, Spleens, Pancreas, & Aorta/IVC)
- Thyroid Exams (Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Neck Masses, Goiters, Thyroid Disease, Nodules & Cysts)
- Obstetric Exams (Pregnancy Confirmation; 1st, 2nd & 3rd Trimester; Size & Dates; and Fetal Dopplers)
- Gynecological Exams (Pelvic, Trans-abdominal, Trans-vaginal, Fibroids, IUD Placement Checks, Irregular Cycles, Heavy Bleeding, Menorrhagia, Ovarian Cysts & Polyps)
- Vascular Studies (Venous/DVT, Arteries, Carotid, & Aortic Aneurysm)
At this time, we do not offer echo ultrasounds. We apologize for any inconvenience.
*Note: You must have an order from a physician to receive diagnostic ultrasound services at Midwest Express Clinic. If you need an order, you may visit a Midwest Express Clinic provider to obtain one.
Elective Ultrasound Services
Midwest Express Clinic also offers the following non-diagnostic, elective ultrasounds: gender reveals and 3D/4D ultrasounds. You can learn more about those services and find a location by visiting those web pages.

Preparing For Your Ultrasound
Do not eat, chew gum or smoke for six hours prior to your ultrasound exam. If you are diabetic, you can have juice if needed. You may drink water as required and may take your medications normally.
- Pelvis
Your bladder must be full for the exam. Please drink one liter of water or other clear, non-carbonated drinks, starting two hours before your appointment and finishing one hour prior to your appointment. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER.If you have a catheter, it must be clamped off before you start to drink. You may eat and take your medications.
- Abdomen & Pelvis
Do not eat for 6 hours prior to your exam. If you are diabetic, you can have juice (if needed).Your bladder must be full for the exam. Drink 28 ounces of water or other clear, non-carbonated drinks, starting two hours before your appointment and finishing one hour prior to your appointment. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER.
- 1st Trimester Pregnancy
Your bladder must be full for the exam. Drink 28 ounces of water or other clear, non-carbonated drinks, starting two hours before your appointment and finishing one hour prior to your appointment. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER.You may eat and take your medications normally.
- 2nd or 3rd Trimester Pregnancy
Your bladder must be full for the exam. Drink 28 ounces of water or other clear, non-carbonated drinks, starting two hours before your appointment and finishing one hour prior to your appointment. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER.You may eat and take your medications normally.
- Gender Reveals
Gender Reveals are non-diagnostic ultrasounds to determine the gender of the fetus. These are available starting at 16 weeks gestation.One hour prior to exam please consume 26-28 ounces of fluid.
Four 2D digital images from your scan will be provided on a USB drive. Printed photos are not available at this time.
If you wish to not know the gender at the time of the exam, you may receive the results in an envelope.
If you need a diagnostic dating ultrasound, you may be seen by a provider for an order.
- Biophysical Profile
Within 30 minutes of your exam, drink sweetened juice or soda. You may eat and take your medications normally. - Any Other Ultrasound Studies
No preparation is required. You may eat, drink and take medications.
